A Weighted Adaptive Range-Averaging Technique to Improve the Precision Consistency of Polarimetric Variable Fields

Abstract The two main metrics for the performance evaluation of radar-variable estimators are the bias and standard deviation (SD) of estimates. Depending on the estimator properties, the bias may increase as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) decreases. The standard deviation, however, always rises as the SNR becomes smaller. For instance, if estimates are computed from 16 samples (typically used for WSR-88D surveillance scans) using a rectangular data window and the maximum unambiguous velocity is ∼9 m s−1, the standard deviation of reflectivity estimates increases 1.6 times as the SNR drops from 20 to 2 dB. But for estimates of differential reflectivity, differential phase, and copolar correlation coefficient, SDs increase ∼6.7, ∼6, and ∼54 times, respectively. Hence, this effect impacts the polarimetric variables substantially more than the spectral moments. Additionally, the polarimetric variable SD is also sensitive to the correlation between signals in horizontal and vertical channels leading to reduced data quality in the regions where the correlation coefficient is low. Such increases in the variability of estimates are observable in the fields of dual polarization variables as an increased spatial inhomogeneity (or noisiness) in the areas where radar echoes exhibit low-to-moderate SNRs and/or decreased correlation coefficient. These effects can obscure the visual identification of weather features as well as adversely impact algorithms. Herein, a novel method that applies variable smoothing in the range where the smoothing intensity depends on the SDs of estimates is presented. It applies little or no range averaging in the regions where data SDs are deemed adequate while using more aggressive smoothing in areas where data appear noisy. Significance Statement The noisiness in the fields of polarimetric variables is an issue that has plagued dual-polarization weather radars since their inception. This is because standard deviations of polarimetric variable estimates increase significantly more with the reduction in SNR than those of spectral moment estimates. A typical mitigation approach that indiscriminately averages a fixed number of estimates in the range may lead to unnecessary loss of range resolution in regions where data appearance is satisfactory. Further, such an approach can be inadequate in regions with a high variability of estimates leading to insufficient enhancement of weather feature visibility. In this study, a method that mitigates these issues is proposed.

Quality and Image Processing Analysis versus Radiation Dose in Hip Radiographic Examinations

Aims: Evaluate the quality and processing of images in hip radiographic examinations.
 Study Design: Six combinations of exposure techniques commonly used in clinical practice were used, keeping the voltage (kVp) value constant, varying only the current and time relationship (mA.s).
 Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out at the Radiodiagnosis Laboratory of the Radiology and Medical Physics graduation courses at the Franciscan University (UFN), as part of the research developed during the Image Processing course in the second semester of 2023.
 Methodology: Image acquisition and radiation dose measurement were performed using clinical radiographic equipment and a model resembling hip anatomy, along with a dosimetric system to quantify radiation dose at the entrance surface (ESAK). The captured images were digitized through a computerized radiography (CR) system, enabling quantitative analysis using histograms and Regions of Interest (ROI) in anatomical structures relevant for diagnosis. Signal and noise values were evaluated, allowing the determination of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and radiographic contrast (CR).
 Results: The results revealed significant differences among the various techniques employed. Some images displayed lower SNR, ranging from 8.14% to 15.60%, yet with higher CR, varying between 5.48% and 22.29%. Remarkably, one technique (70 kVp with 16 mA.s) demonstrated the best cost-benefit relationship, reducing radiation exposure by 48.7% (from 6.32 to 3.24 mGy) with minimal reduction in SNR, less than 10%, and a 5.47% increase in CR.
 Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance for radiology professionals seeking imaging techniques that guarantee high diagnostic quality with minimal patient exposure. Prioritizing safer and more effective radiological practices is essential for delivering quality healthcare services.

The influence of patient positioning and immobilization equipment on MR image quality and image registration in radiation therapy.

MRI is preferred for brain tumor assessment, while CT is used for radiotherapy simulation. This study evaluated immobilization equipment's impact on CT-MRI registration accuracy and MR image quality in RT setup. We included CT and MR images from 11 patients with high-grade glioma, all of whom were immobilized with a thermoplastic mask and headrest. T1- and T2-weighted MR images were acquired using an MR head coil in a diagnostic setup (DS) and a body matrix coil in RT setup. To assess MR image quality, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were considered in some dedicated regions of interest. We also evaluated the impact of immobilization equipment on CT-MRI rigid registration using line profile and external contour methods. The CNR and SNR reduction was in the RT setup of imaging. This was more evident in T1-weighted images than in T2-weighted ones. The SNR decreased by 14.91% and 12.09%, while CNR decreased by 25.12% and 20.15% in T1- and T2-weighted images, respectively. The immobilization equipment in the RT setup decreased the mean error in rigid registration by 1.02mm. The external contour method yielded Dice similarity coefficients (DSC) of 0.84 and 0.92 for CT-DS MRI and CT-RT MRI registration, respectively. The image quality reduction in the RT setup was due to the imaged region's anatomy and its position relative to the applied coil. Furthermore, optimizing the pulse sequence is crucial for MR imaging in RT applications. Although the use of immobilization equipment may decrease the image quality in the RT setup, it does not affect organ delineation, and the image quality is still satisfactory for this purpose. Also, the use of immobilization equipment in the RT setup has increased registration accuracy.

Actuation Mechanisms Used in MRI-Compatible Robotic Surgeries: A Review

There has been increasing use of robotic surgery over the years, as it has evolved as an improvement over minimally invasive surgery (MIS), where a surgeon can use a tele-manipulator to operate on a patient. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become the leading form of image acquisition due to its ability to produce high resolution images during robotically assisted MIS. However, the MRI scanner places conditions on the robots that allow only certain compatible actuation methods used in the robotic system to negate large interference that hinders the image quality. The current review focused on the four main MRI-compatible actuation mechanisms: hydraulic, pneumatic, piezoelectric, and shape memory alloy. This review mainly discussed signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) reduction, performance, and limitations from the recent publications on MRI-compatible robotic surgeries. Favorable MRI compatibility with low SNR reduction, performance, and simple implementation was observed to be the most important characteristics of a proper actuation mechanism for MRI robotic surgeries. After reviewing each approach, it was concluded that shape memory alloy, despite having a form of limitation, demonstrated to be more favorable compared to other actuation methods because of factors such as low cost, negligible SNR reduction, and high-power output for medical interventions

Mutual interferences between SIAT aPET insert and a 3 T uMR 790 MRI scanner

Objective. Dual-modality small animal PET/MR imaging provides temporally correlated information on two biochemical processes of a living object. An magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-compatible small animal PET insert named Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) aPET was developed by using dual-ended readout depth encoding detectors to simultaneously achieve a uniform high spatial resolution and high sensitivity at the SIAT. In this work, the mutual interferences between SIAT aPET and the 3 T uMR 790 MRI scanner of United Imaging was quantitatively evaluated. Approach. To minimize the mutual interferences, only the PET detectors and the readout electronics were placed inside the MRI scanner, the major signal processing electronic was placed in the corner of the MRI room and the auxiliary unit was placed in the MRI technical room. A dedicated mouse radio fRequency (RF) coil with a transmitter and receiver was developed for the PET insert. The effects of PET scanner on the B 0 and B 1 field of the MRI scanner and the quality of the MRI images were measured. The effects of MRI imaging on the performance of both the PET detectors and scanner were also measured. Main results. The electronic and mechanical components of the PET insert affected the homogeneity of the B 0 field. The PET insert had no effect on the homogeneity of B 1 produced by the dedicated mouse coil but slightly reduced the strength of B 1. The mean and standard deviation of the RF noise map were increased by 2.2% and 11.6%, respectively, while the PET insert was placed in the MRI scanner and powered on. Eddy current was produced while the PET insert was placed in the MRI scanner, and it was further increased while the PET insert was powered on. Despite the above-mentioned interferences from the PET insert, the MR images of a uniform cylindrical water phantom showed that the changes in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and homogeneity as the PET insert was placed in the MRI scanner were acceptable regardless of whether the PET insert was powered off or powered on. The maximum reduction of SNR was less than 11%, and the maximum reduction of homogeneity was less than 2.5% while the PET insert was placed inside the MRI scanner and powered on for five commonly used MRI sequences. MRI using gradient echo (GRE), spin echo (SE) and fast spin echo (FSE) sequences had negligible effects on the flood histograms and energy resolution of the PET detectors, as well as the spatial resolution and sensitivity of the PET scanner. Significance. The mutual interference between the SIAT aPET and the 3 T uMR 790 MRI scanner are acceptable. Simultaneous PET/MRI imaging of small animals can be performed with the two scanners.

Signal-to-noise ratio penalties from a loss of stimulated echoes when using slab-selective excitation in three-dimensional fast spin echo imaging with long echo trains.

Three-dimensional fast spin echo imaging with long echo trains combines high resolution with reasonable acquisition times and reduced specific absorption rate due tolow refocusing flip angles. Typically, an entire volume is encoded (nonselective excitation) or localization can be performed with slab select excitation, which uses a long 90° pulse for precise localization, followed by a preliminary nonselective 180° pulse bounded by spoiler gradients to destroy signal outside of the volume of interest. Subsequent flip angles in the train are nonselective and identical between the two methods. The inclusion of the initial selective pulse and spoiler gradients results in a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) penalty for slab selection, beyond the slice-averaging dependence, arising from a loss of stimulated echoes. SNR differences are explored using Bloch equation simulations of a T2-weighted 96 echo train sequence with varying parameters including T2, T1, and B1+ and compared with phantom and in vivo brain, neck, and knee experiments. In vivo SNR measurements in the three regions showed a maximum decrease of selective SNR by 29% (gastrocnemius muscle), 25% (pons), and 22% (globus pallidus), despite similar experimental parameters to nonselective experiments. Decreased SNR was compounded by B1+ variation affecting prescribedflip angles with further smaller reductions with T2 and T1 times. In conclusion, the elimination of coherences via the preliminary nominal 180° pulse and spoiler gradients in addition to the extended echo timing from the long excitation pulse resulted in a reduction in SNR compared with the nonselective case. Consideration of the required SNR and chosen anatomy as well as sequence restrictions should be weighed before choosing slab-selective excitation.

A phasor-based approach to improve optical sectioning in any confocal microscope with a tunable pinhole.

Confocal fluorescence microscopy is a well‐established imaging technique capable of generating thin optical sections of biological specimens. Optical sectioning in confocal microscopy is mainly determined by the size of the pinhole, a small aperture placed in front of a point detector. In principle, imaging with a closed pinhole provides the highest degree of optical sectioning. In practice, the dramatic reduction of signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) at smaller pinhole sizes makes challenging the use of pinhole sizes significantly smaller than 1 Airy Unit (AU). Here, we introduce a simple method to “virtually” perform confocal imaging at smaller pinhole sizes without the dramatic reduction of SNR. The method is based on the sequential acquisition of multiple confocal images acquired at different pinhole aperture sizes and image processing based on a phasor analysis. The implementation is conceptually similar to separation of photons by lifetime tuning (SPLIT), a technique that exploits the phasor analysis to achieve super‐resolution, and for this reason we call this method SPLIT‐pinhole (SPLIT‐PIN). We show with simulated data that the SPLIT‐PIN image can provide improved optical sectioning (i.e., virtually smaller pinhole size) but better SNR with respect to an image obtained with closed pinhole. For instance, two images acquired at 2 and 1 AU can be combined to obtain a SPLIT‐PIN image with a virtual pinhole size of 0.2 AU but with better SNR. As an example of application to biological imaging, we show that SPLIT‐PIN improves confocal imaging of the apical membrane in an in vitro model of the intestinal epithelium.Research HighlightsWe describe a method to boost the optical sectioning power of any confocal microscope. The method is based on the sequential acquisition of multiple confocal images acquired at different pinhole aperture sizes. The resulting image series is analyzed using the phasor‐based separation of photons by lifetime tuning (SPLIT) algorithm. The SPLIT‐pinhole (SPLIT‐PIN) method produces images with improved optical sectioning but preserved SNR. This is the first time that the phasor analysis and SPLIT algorithms are used to exploit the spatial information encoded in a tunable pinhole size and to improve optical sectioning of the confocal microscope.

Regional Selectivity of Neuromelanin Changes in the Substantia Nigra in Atypical Parkinsonism.

Neurodegeneration in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) in parkinsonian syndromes may affect the nigral territories differently. The objective of this study was to investigate the regional selectivity of neurodegenerative changes in the SNc in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and atypical parkinsonism using neuromelanin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A total of 22 healthy controls (HC), 38 patients with PD, 22 patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), 20 patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA, 13 with the parkinsonian variant, 7 with the cerebellar variant), 7 patients with dementia with Lewy body (DLB), and 4 patients with corticobasal syndrome were analyzed. volume and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values of the SNc were derived from neuromelanin-sensitive MRI in the whole SNc. Analysis of signal changes was performed in the sensorimotor, associative, and limbic territories of the SNc. SNc volume and corrected volume were significantly reduced in PD, PSP, and MSA versus HC. Patients with PSP had lower volume, corrected volume, SNR, and contrast-to-noise ratio than HC and patients with PD and MSA. Patients with PSP had greater SNR reduction in the associative region than HC and patients with PD and MSA. Patients with PD had reduced SNR in the sensorimotor territory, unlike patients with PSP. Patients with MSA did not differ from patients with PD. This study provides the first MRI comparison of the topography of neuromelanin changes in parkinsonism. The spatial pattern of changes differed between PSP and synucleinopathies. These nigral topographical differences are consistent with the topography of the extranigral involvement in parkinsonian syndromes. © 2022 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Deep Learning Image Processing Enables 40% Faster Spinal MR Scans Which Match or Exceed Quality of Standard of Care

ObjectiveThis prospective multicenter multireader study evaluated the performance of 40% scan-time reduced spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reconstructed with deep learning (DL).MethodsA total of 61 patients underwent standard of care (SOC) and accelerated (FAST) spine MRI. DL was used to enhance the accelerated set (FAST-DL). Three neuroradiologists were presented with paired side-by-side datasets (666 series). Datasets were blinded and randomized in sequence and left-right display order. Image features were preference rated. Structural similarity index (SSIM) and per pixel L1 was assessed for the image sets pre and post DL-enhancement as a quantitative assessment of image integrity impact.ResultsFAST-DL was qualitatively better than SOC for perceived signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and artifacts and equivalent for other features. Quantitative SSIM was high, supporting the absence of image corruption by DL processing.ConclusionDL enables 40% spine MRI scan time reduction while maintaining diagnostic integrity and image quality with perceived benefits in SNR and artifact reduction, suggesting potential for clinical practice utility.

Accelerated Fast BOTDA Assisted by Compressed Sensing and Image Denoising

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme for accelerated fast BOTDA. The effect of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on recovery performance of compressed sensing is simulated and analyzed, it is found that a reduction in SNR requires much larger frequency data to recover the original Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS). To enable a high recovery probability, Block-Matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) algorithm is employed to enhance the SNR of Brillouin time trace and reduce the number of averages. Combining with a principal component analysis (PCA) based compressed sensing technique, the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) can be successfully reconstructed from only 37.5% frequency data. In the experiment, 75 randomly selected frequency data is acquired to reconstruct the BGS. Distributed strain sensing is achieved over 15 km single-mode fiber with 3 m spatial resolution and 0.52 MHz Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) uncertainty. Due to the accelerated process, the measurement time with 40 averages is less than 0.5 s.

Staring Spotlight SAR with Nonlinear Frequency Modulation Signal and Azimuth Non-Uniform Sampling for Low Sidelobe Imaging

In synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging, geometric resolution, sidelobe level (SLL) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are the most important parameters for measuring the SAR image quality. The staring spotlight mode continuously transmits signals to a fixed area by steering the azimuth beam to acquire azimuth high geometric resolution, and its two-dimensional (2D) impulse response with the low SLL is usually obtained from the 2D weighted power spectral density (PSD) by the selected weighting window function. However, this results in the SNR reduction due to 2D amplitude window weighting. In this paper, the staring spotlight SAR with nonlinear frequency modulation (NLFM) signal and azimuth non-uniform sampling (ANUS) is proposed to obtain high geometric resolution SAR images with the low SLL and almost without any SNR reduction. The NLFM signal obtains non-equal interval frequency sampling points under uniform time sampling by adjusting the instantaneous chirp rate. Its corresponding PSD is similar to the weighting window function, and its pulse compression result without amplitude window weighting has low sidelobes. To obtain a similar Doppler frequency distribution for low sidelobe imaging in azimuth, the received SAR echoes are designed to be non-uniformly sampled in azimuth, in which the sampling sequence is dense in middle and sparse in both ends, and azimuth compression result with window weighting would also have low sidelobes. According to the echo model of the proposed imaging mode, both the back projection algorithm (BPA) and range migration algorithm (RMA) are modified and presented to handle the raw data of the proposed imaging mode. Both imaging results on simulated targets and experimental real SAR data processing results of a ground-based radar validate the proposed low sidelobe imaging mode.

Double delay alternating with nutation for tailored excitation facilitates banding-free isotropic high-resolution intracranial vessel wall imaging.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of a double delay alternating with nutation for tailored excitation (D‐DANTE)‐prepared sequence for banding‐free isotropic high‐resolution intracranial vessel wall imaging (IC‐VWI) and to compare its performance with regular DANTE in terms of signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) as well as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood suppression efficiency. To this end, a D‐DANTE–prepared 3D turbo spin echo sequence was implemented by interleaving two separate DANTE pulse trains with different RF phase‐cycling schemes, but keeping all other DANTE parameters unchanged, including the total number of pulses and total preparation time. This achieved a reduction of the banding distance compared with regular DANTE enabling banding‐free imaging up to higher resolutions. Bloch simulations assuming static vessel wall and flowing CSF spins were performed to compare DANTE and D‐DANTE in terms of SNR and vessel wall/CSF contrast. Similar image quality measures were assessed from measurements on 13 healthy middle‐aged volunteers. Both simulation and in vivo results showed that D‐DANTE had only slightly lower vessel wall/CSF and vessel wall/blood contrast‐to‐noise ratio values compared with regular DANTE, which originated from a 10%–15% reduction in vessel wall SNR but not from reduced CSF or blood suppression efficiency. As anticipated, IC‐VWI acquisitions showed that D‐DANTE can successfully remove banding artifacts compared with regular DANTE with equal scan time or DANTE preparation length. Moreover, application was demonstrated in a patient with an intracranial aneurysm, indicating improved robustness to slow flow artifacts compared with clinically available 3D turbo spin echo scans. In conclusion, D‐DANTE provides banding artifact‐free IC‐VWI up to higher isotropic resolutions compared with regular DANTE. This allows for a more flexible choice of DANTE preparation parameters in high‐resolution IC‐VWI protocols.

How the phased array coil elements placement influences the image quality in cardiac magnetic resonance

Phased array coils are used for signal reception in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) for their large spatial coverage and for their high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, SNR loss and image quality degradation may arise in cases of incorrect placement of coil arrays, due to sub-optimal combination of the individual coil signals. Analytical simulation of the magnetic fields produced by each individual receiver of a commercial 8-elements cardiac array is proposed. A 2D cross-correlation between array elements magnetic field maps is also proposed to evaluate coil shift. Phantom and in vivo experiments were performed at 1.5 T to evaluate the effect of array coil misalignment in terms of SNR losses and image degradation. Results obtained from phantom and in vivo experiments with different coil shifting are presented. A SNR reduction up to 70% was observed in the cardiac region in case of misalignment between the anterior and the posterior coil portions. Providing tools to prevent coil misalignment could be beneficial to minimize image degradation in MRI exams. In this paper, we proposed a straightforward method based on 2D cross-correlation to estimate the coil shift from images collected from a homogeneous phantom. Providing knowledge of the B1 field in a region of interest would help technologists to have information on the expected image quality and to potentially give indication whether a coil repositioning is needed.

Imaging performance of a high-field in-line magnetic resonance imaging linear accelerator with a patient rotation system for fixed-gantry radiotherapy

This paper describes the imaging performance of a high-field in-line MRI linear accelerator with a patient rotation system in-situ. Signal quality was quantified using signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and RF uniformity maps. B0-field inhomogeneity was assessed using magnetic field mapping. SNR was evaluated with various entries into the Faraday cage which were required for extended couch translations. SNR varied between 103 and 87 across PRS rotation angles. Maximum B0-field inhomogeneity corresponded to 0.7 mm of geometric distortion. A 45 × 55 cm2 aperture allowed PRS translation with no reduction in SNR. Imaging performance with the PRS in-situ was found to be acceptable.

MRI in patients with implanted active devices: how to combine safety and image quality using a limited transmission field?

Radio frequency (RF) pulses in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can interact with implanted devices and cause tissue damage. However, there are new devices that can safely perform measurements with liberal MRI conditions such as an RF transmission field B1+rms ≤ 2.0μT. We investigated whether MRI in this case is limited for these technical reasons. We selected typical MRI protocols of six body regions (brain, cervical spine, lumbar spine, knee, liver, heart) using two typical 1.5T MRI scanners. Overall, we adapted 62 sequences to B1+rms conditions and evaluated their diagnostic quality. For this, we measured signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise-ratio (CNR), and geometric deviation (GD) as quality parameters, using phantom studies. For questionnaire studies, we selected pairs of original and adapted sequences in healthy volunteers. Blinded radiologists rated the images as single sequence rating and in direct comparison. Roughly one-third of the checked sequences were below the B1+rms limit. Here, 56 of the 62 adapted sequences showed at least the same image quality in single ratings. A reduction in SNR and/or CNR was found with 31 sequences and only one sequence with considerably increased GD. Especially, sequences with original high B1+rms values, PD sequences, and sequences of the Siemens knee and heart protocol were difficult to adapt, whereas most TSE and IR sequences had no clinical limitations. By limiting the transmission field to B1+rms ≤ 2.0μT, clinically relevant MR sequences can be adapted with nearly no reduction in image quality. Despite limiting the transmission field, high-quality MR imaging is possible. Which Is the Optimal Scan Time of 18F-DOPA PET/CT in Patients With Recurrent Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma?: Results From a Dynamic Acquisition Study.

The aim of this retrospective study was to determine, by dynamic acquisition, the optimal scan time of F-DOPA PET/CT in patients with recurrent medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Twenty-one patients with suspected recurrent MTC underwent dynamic F-DOPA PET/CT (lasting 45 minutes) followed by whole-body scan. Three different time intervals of dynamic acquisition were evaluated: ultra-early phase (2-5 minutes), early phase (5-10 minutes), and late phase (40-45 minutes). The number and SUVmax of all detected lesions among the 3 dynamic acquisition phases were compared on qualitative and semiquantitative analyses. Time-activity curves, SUVmax washout rate between ultra-early or early phase and late phase, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between lesion and background activity were also calculated. At dynamic acquisition, 15 of 21 patients were classified as PET-positive and 6 of 21 as PET-negative, with overall 21 detected lesions. Ultra-early and early imaging provided a better lesion visualization than late phase in more than 70% of cases, as also reflected by SNR (mean SNR reduction between 2 and 45 minutes, -45% ± 19%). Time-activity curves showed a rapid tracer accumulation in MTC lesions, with an average maximum uptake at 2 minutes after injection. Mean lesion SUVmax was 2-fold higher in ultra-early frames compared with last frames (mean washout rate, -44% ± 33%). Finally, compared with whole-body imaging in the same field of view, dynamic acquisition identified 1 additional positive patient and 3 additional lesions in 2 patients. Our study, showing a very fast F-DOPA uptake in MTC lesions, suggests the utility to obtain early PET/CT images, already at 2 to 5 minutes after tracer injection, when maximum lesion tracer uptake is reached.

Image Quality and Dose Reduction by Dual Source Computed Tomography Coronary Angiography: Protocol Comparison.

Purpose:To compare image quality and radiation dose among different protocols in patients who underwent a 128-slice dual source computed tomography coronary angiography (DSCT-CTCA).Methods:Ninety patients were retrospectively grouped according to heart rate (HR): 26 patients (group A) with stable HR ≤60 bpm were acquired using high pitch spiral mode (FLASH); 48 patients (group B) with irregular HR ≤60 bpm or stable HR between 60 and 70 bpm using step and shoot mode; and 16 patients (group C) with irregular HR >60 bpm or stable HR ≥70 bpm by retrospective electrocardiogram pulsing acquisition. Signal to noise ratio (SNR) and contrast to noise ratio (CNR) were measured for the main vascular structures. Moreover, the dose-length product and the effective dose were assessed.Results:Both SNR and CNR were higher in group A compared to group C (18.27 ± 0.32 vs 11.22 ± 0.50 and 16.75 ± 0.32 vs 10.17 ± 0.50; P = .001). The effective dose was lower in groups A and B (2.09 ± 1.27 mSv and 4.60 ± 2.78 mSv, respectively) compared to group C (9.61 ± 5.95 mSv) P < .0001.Conclusion:The correct selection of a low-dose, HR-matched CTCA scan protocol with a DSCT scanner provides substantial reduction of radiation exposure and better SNR and CNR.

Signal-to-noise ratio reduction due to oceanic turbulence in oceanic wireless optical communication links

The effect of oceanic turbulence on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver of an oceanic wireless optical communication (OWOC) link is studied. To quantify such effect, the metric employed is the reduction in the SNR when oceanic turbulence is present. SNR reduction due to oceanic turbulence is formulated by subtracting the 10 log (SNR) evaluated at the receiver in the presence of turbulence from the 10 log (SNR) evaluated at the receiver in the absence of turbulence. Classical SNR formula which is function of the received optical power, noise and optical detector parameters is utilized. As the average received power, our earlier result that uses a Gaussian optical source field and a finite Gaussian receiver aperture in atmospheric turbulence is adapted for oceanic turbulence and such found average received power is inserted in the SNR expression. OWOC links that use collimated Gaussian optical sources at the transmitter and PIN photodiode, avalanche photodiode (APD) at the receiver, are analyzed. Results that present the variations of the SNR reduction due to oceanic turbulence against the changes in the source, oceanic turbulence and the optical receiver parameters are reported.

Automatic tube potential selection with tube current modulation in coronary CT angiography: Can it achieve consistent image quality among various individuals?

The present study included a total of 111 consecutive patients who had undergone coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography, using a first-generation dual-source CT with automatic tube potential selection and tube current modulation. Body weight (BW) and body mass index (BMI) were recorded prior to CT examinations. Image noise and attenuation of the proximal ascending aorta (AA) and descending aorta (DA) at the middle level of the left ventricle were measured. Correlations between BW, BMI and objective image quality were evaluated using linear regression. In addition, two subgroups based on BMI (BMI ≤25 and >25 kg/m2) were analyzed. Subjective image quality, image noise, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were all compared between those. The image noise of the AA increased with the BW and BMI (BW: r=0.453, P<0.001; BMI: r=0.545, P<0.001). The CNR and SNR of the AA were inversely correlated with BW and BMI, respectively. The image noise of the DA and the CNR and SNR of the DA exhibited a similar association to those with the BW or BMI. The BMI >25 kg/m2 group had a significant increase in image noise (33.1±6.9 vs. 27.8±4.0 HU, P<0.05) and a significant reduction in CNR and SNR, when compared with those in the BMI ≤25 kg/m2 group (CNR: 18.9±4.3 vs. 16.1±3.7, P<0.05; SNR: 16.0±3.8 vs. 13.6±3.2, P<0.05). Patients with a BMI of ≤25 kg/m2 had more coronary artery segments scored as excellent, compared with patients with a BMI of >25 kg/m2 (P=0.02). In conclusion, this method is not able to achieve a consistent objective image quality across the entire patient population. The impact of BW and BMI on objective image quality was not completely eliminated. BMI-based adjustment of the tube potential may achieve a more consistent image quality compared to automatic tube potential selection, particularly in patients with a larger body habitus.

Adaptive CoMP with Spatial Phase Coding for Interference Mitigation in the Heterogeneous Network

This paper proposes an adaptive coordinated multi point (CoMP) scheme using pre-coding in order to improve the reliability of wireless communication systems based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). In the conventional scheme, the received signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the mobile is degraded due to the interference signal. Therefore, the bit error rate (BER) performance is degraded, as is, the reliability of the system, due to inter-cell interference (ICI). Therefore, the BER performance of the system is reduced and the transmitter must perform unnecessary re-transmission. The proposed scheme uses the CoMP scheme to improve reliability in a heterogeneous network (HetNet) system. Additionally, the proposed scheme uses the constructive spatial phase coding (SPC) scheme to mitigate the received SNR reduction due to the interference signal. Therefore, the proposed scheme can prevent performance degradation caused by the interference signal. When a mobile is located in the cell edge, the transmission signal is distorted by the transmitted signal from the adjacent cell. The proposed scheme can reduce the SNR of the interference signal by using the destructive SPC scheme. Therefore, this scheme can improve the reliability of the system. The simulation results show that the BER performance of the proposed scheme is better than that of the conventional scheme. As a result, the proposed scheme improves the reliability of systems by adaptively applying the CoMP and SPC schemes.
